Background: The captain of an Israeli-bound Liberian oil tanker shelled by Arab guerrillas in the Red Sea last Friday (11 June) said on Thursday (17 June) it was a miracle his ship did not blow up when hit by eight bazooka shells, one of which caused a small fire.

Captain Markos Mouskos, a 37-year-old Greek, called for international protection for oil tankers and spoke scornfully of his assailants, whom he described mockingly as "courageous, gallant attackers".

His ship, the 78,000-ton "Coral Sea", arrived in Israel's Red Sea port of Eilat on Wednesday night (16 June) with its load of oil for transshipment over the Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline to the Mediterranean and Europe.
