Background: On Friday (23 July) Egyptian Army officers from the Abassir Barracks in Cairo took part in an Independence Day ceremony which included wreath-laying outside the Nasser Mosque. It was int 19th anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution, and the first since the death of President Nasser. Later in the day President Sadat made a customary Presidential Speech at the opening session of the National Congress of the Arab Socialist Union. In it be launched a forthright attack on divisions within the Arab world, and sharply criticized the policies of King Hussein of Jordan.

SYNOPSIS: Trumpeters on a balcony of the Nasser Mosque in Cairo herald the start of last Friday's Independence Day ceremony, ??? army officers from the Abassir Barracks bring forward commemorative wreaths.

It was the 19th anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution, and the first since the death of President Nasser.

Many high-ranking officers were present to pay homage to the fallen of the cause. The List Post was sounded, and the observance continued as a military bend played in the background.

Although the ceremony was demanded by military personnel, a large number of civilians also attended.

Towards the end of the ceremony a group of young Russians came forward bearing red roses to place beside the wreaths.

Many civilians lined the area shooting responses.

Later on Friday, President Sadat arrived at the opening session of the National Congress of the Arab Socialist Union to deliver the customary presidential speech.

In the speech President Sadat launched a bitter attack on the divisions within the Arab World, and called for an end to what he described as "the deplorable disunity" which was weakening ??? against Israel. "In the face of Israel we are all Arabs" be said "but unfortunately disunity still prevails amongst us." President Sadat also made a personal attach on King Hussein of Jordan, condemning has policies and accusing him of trying to liquidate the palestinian commandos, 1971 was the year of decision for Egypt, the President said, and he wad ready to pay the price of a million lives if be bad to go to war with Israel.
