Background: Ping-yang Ch'u has been severely disabled since early childhood when he lost both hands and the sight of his right eye when an old bomb that he and his friends had been playing with exploded.

Ch'u works for a farming institution in Taiwan during the day and attends mass communications courses at a nearby college in the evenings. Despite his handicap, Ch'u rides a bicycle, enjoys swimming and plays basketball regularly.
