    TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: "MR. CHUKWU, NOW THAT THE FEDERAL SOLDIERS HAVE ARRIVED HERE, ARE YOUR AFRAID OF THEM?"



    CHUKWU: AM I AFRAID OF THEM? NO, I AM NOT AGAINST THEM, SINCE I AM IN TOUCH WITH......(INDISTINCT).



    INTERVIEWER: HOW IS THE FOOD SITUATION IN THIS VILLAGE NOW?



    CHUKWU: ..... WE HAVE ALL WE CAN PRODUCE..... BUT WE DON'T GET FOOD FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES..... WE DON'T GET SALT AT ALL.



    LATER GENERAL MILROY WAS ASKED AT THE TOWN OF AWGU ABOUT HIS MEETINGS WITH REFUGEES FROM ISHIAGU.



    SOUND ON FILM CONTINUES:



    INTERVIEWER: YOU DID INTERVIEW A NUMBER OF REFUGEES TODAY. DO YOU THINK THAT THIS METHOD YOU'RE ADOPTING NOW OF INTERVIEWING PEOPLE WILL REASSURE THE REST OF THE WORLD AND INTERNALLY IN NIGERIA AS WELL?



    MILROY: WELL, AGAIN TODAY WAS REALLY OUR FIRST DAY AND WHAT WE DID TODAY WAS BY NO MEANS THE ONLY ACTIVITY WE'RE GOING TO DARSY OUT -- WE WILL BE MAKING OTHER INVESTIGATIONS -- CHECKING ON OTHER STATEMENTS MADE BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO SEE WHETHER IN FACT THEY ARE IN EFFECT IN THE FIELD AND REPORTING WHAT WE FIND. THEN I WOULD THINK THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS SAID COME IN AND LOOK,THIS IS WHAT WE SAY WE'RE DOING, YOU REPORT AND SAY WHAT YOU SEE, AND.....

    Background: FOUR INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS HAVE SET OUT INTO EASTERN NIGERIA ON THE FIRST LEG OF A TWO-MONTHS INSPECTION TOUR OF NIGERIA. IN THE PAST FEW DAYS MEMBERS OF THE TEAM HAVE VISITED ENUGU, BENIN, AWGU AND OBILAGU AIR STRIP, ALL FORMERLY IN TERRITORY HELD BY BIAFRA, THE BREAKAWAY EASTERN REGION OF NIGERIA.

    THE OBSERVER TEAM HAD BEEN INVITED BY THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT TO WITNESS THE CONDUCT OF THEIR TROOPS DURING THE CLOSING STAGES OF THE FIGHTING BETWEEN FEDERAL AND BIAFRAN FORCES. AT ENUGU THE OBSERVER TEAM SPLIT UP -- GENERALS ALEXANDER OF BRITAIN AND RAAB OF SWEDEN WENT EASTWARDS TO AGAKILI TO SEE THE RELIEF OPERATION THERE, AND GENERAL MILROY OF CANADA AND MR. NILS GUSSING OF THE UNITED NATIONS WENT SOUTH TOWARDS THE NEWLY CAPTURED AIRSTRIP OF OBILAGU. THE AIR STRIP WAS CAPTURED BY ELEMENTS OF THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN FIRST DIVISION LAST FRIDAY.

    THE OBSERVERS UNDERTOOK A GRUELLING JOURNEY ALONG BUSH TRACKS, PAST BOGGED DOWN VEHICLES AND OVER REPAIRED BRIDGES TO THE VILLAGE OF ISHIAGU. IBO VILLAGERS WHO HAD FLED DURING THE FEDERAL CAPTURE WERE SLOWLY COMING BACK TO THE VILLAGE. THERE ONE OF THE VILLAGERS WHO HAD MET THE OBSERVERS, MR. JOSEPH CHUKWU, WAS INTERVIEWED.
