Background: Rain washed out the first cricket test between England and India at Lords today with the game in the balance. At tea, when heavy rain began falling, India were eight for 145, needing 38 runs to win the game. At that stage India was struggling against some tight spin bowling by Norman Gifford who took four wickets in the innings and eight in the match. At one stage, with Engineer and Gavaskar batting, the match looked within India's grasp. The pair put on 66 in 50 minutes before Engineer was out. An unusual incident marred the day. John Snow collided with Gavaskar while the batsmen were taking a quick single. The MCC asked Snow to apologise, which he did.
