Background: ONE OF THE MOST CHARMING OF YOUNG ANIMALS - THE POLAR BEARS CUB - IS A CROWD PLEASER IN ANY ZOO. LOOKING LIKE A BUNDLE OF SOFT, CUDDLY WHITE FUR, THE CUBS FIND GREAT FAVOUR WITH CHILDREN, WHO, NO DOUBT. WOULD YOU LIKE THEM AS PETS OR TOYS. RECENTLY, THE ZOOS IN VANCOUVER, CANADA, AND COPENHAGEN, DENMARK, ADDED THESE VALUABLE "ATTRACTIONS" TO THEIR COLLECTIONS, AND ENSURED THAT THIS SUMMER'S ATTENDANCE FIGURES WILL BE SATISFACTORY.

THE NEWCOMER TO THE VANCOUVER ZOO ARRIVED IN A CRATE ABOARD AN AEROPLANE FROM TUKTUYAKTAK IN THE ARCTIC. THE SIX-WEEKS OLD CUB'S MOTHER WAS KILLED BY ESKIMO HUNTERS, BUT HE IS ASSURED OF GOOD CARE AT HIS NEW HOME IN STANLEY PARK ZOO. HE WEIGHS TEN-POUNDS NOW, BUT IN A FEW YEARS HE WILL WEIGH ABOUT ONE THOUSAND-POUNDS.

COPENHAGEN ZOO IS LUCKIER THAN MOST, IN THAT IT HAS BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL IN BREEDING AND REARING QUITE A NUMBER OF THESE VALUABLE LITTLE ANIMALS. ALSO, THERE ARE LARGE NUMBERS IN THE ARCTIC REGIONS OF GREENLAND, WHICH ARE TRAPPED AND EXPORTED ALL OVER THE WORLD. HOWEVER, THE TWO LATEST ARRIVALS ARE ALREADY CAUSING A GREAT AMOUNT OF EXCITEMENT AS THEY FROLIC IN A SPECIAL ENCLOSURE WITH THEIR MOTHER.

BORN AT THE ZOO LAST NOVEMBER, THE BABIES EMERGED FROM THEIR WARM DEN ONLY ON MAR. 11. THE MOTHER AND BABIES ARE KEPT SEPARATELY FROM THE FATHER. HE IS ONLY INTERESTED IN THE MOTHER, AND IS LIABLE TO EAT THE CUBS IF ALLOWED NEAR THEM.
