Background: SALVATOR BURRUNI OF ITALY WON THE WORLD FLYWEIGHT BOXING TITLE IN ROME ON FRIDAY WHEN HE OUTPOINTED THE HOLDER, PONE KINGPETCH OF THAILAND.

THE 32-YEAR-OLD ITALIAN CROWNED A LONG AND HONOURABLE CAREER WITH HIS WIN. PERSISTENT AGGRESSION FROM THE STOCKY ITALIAN WAS TOO MUCH FOR THE TALLER KINGPETCH. DESPITE HIS AGE, BURRUNI SETA HARD PACE FROM THE START TO GIVE HIS OPPONENT LITTLE CHANCE TO EXPLOIT SUPERIOR BOXING SKILL.

BURRUNI PACED THE FIGHT WELL. HEAVY TWO-FISTED ATTACKS AT THE START OF EACH ROUND WERE FOLLOWED BY A PERIOD DURING WHICH HE HELD OFF HIS OPPONENT BY GOOD BOXING, AND THEN HE BUILT UP MORE ATTACKS AT THE END OF THE ROUND. THE ITALIAN WAS ESTIMATED BY SOME RINGSIDE OFFICIALS TO HAVE WON II OF THE FIFTEEN ROUNDS.

AT THE END OF THE FIGHT THERE WAS NO DOUBT ABOUT THE WINNER. THE RING WAS INVADED BY BURRUNI'S SUPPORTERS AS THE 15,000 CAPACITY CROWD SHOUTED THEIR DELIGHT.

THE THAI JUDGE, CHUA CHAKSHURAKSHA SAID AFTERWARD: "PONE WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT HE DID NOT BOX BETTER, BUT HE SPORTINGLY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT BURRUNI WAS AN EASY WINNER. THERE WAS NEVER ANY DOUBT ABOUT THE DECISION."
