Background: THE BIGGEST SHIP IN THE WORLD, THE JAPANESE TANKER "IDEMITSU MARU", SAILED FROM YOKOHAMA THIS WEEK ON HER MAIDEN VOYAGE TO KUWAIT. AT 210,000 TONS DEADWEIGHT SHE IS ABOUT 60,000 TONS HEAVIER THAN THE "TOKYO MARU", UNTIL NOW THE LARGEST VESSEL AFLOAT.

THE MAMMOTH TANKER IS 1,100 FEET (342 METRES) LONG, 164 FEET (50 METRES) WIDE AND 76 FEET (23 METRES) DEEP. SHE IS SUBSTANTIALLY LONGER THAN THE HEIGHT OF THE EIFFEL TOWER -- CAMERAMEN WHO ATTENDED THE LAUNCHING CEREMONY WERE ADVISED BY THE SHIPBUILDERS TO TAKE AN AEROPLANE.

WORK BEGAN ON THE IDEMITSU MARU AT THE ISHIKAWAJIMA - HARIMA HEAVY INDUSTRIES' MODERN SHIPYARD AT YOKOHAMA IN FEBRUARY, 1966. THE VESSEL WAS LAUNCHED 7 MONTHS LATER, ON SEPTEMBER 5TH. PREFABRICATION WAS THE KEY TO SPEED DURING CONSTRUCTION. THE BOW SECTION WAS MADE SEPARATELY AND THEN JOINED ON THE MAIN PART OF THE HULL. BECAUSE OF THE SHIP'S GREAT LENGTH, THE BRIDGE WAS PLACED AMIDSHIPS, INSTEAD OF AFT, TO AID NAVIGATION.

THE VESSEL IS HIGHLY AUTOMATIC AND, DESPITE HER GIGANTIC SIZE, CARRIES A CREW OF ONLY 32 MEN. THE CAPTAIN IS ABLE TO CONTROL HIS SHIP WITH THE AID OF HUNDREDS OF CLOSED-CIRCUIT TELEVISION UNITS.

THE IDEMITSU MARU, WHICH HAS A CRUISING SPEED OF 16.5 KNOTS, IS DIVIDED INTO 12 OIL TANKS AND 4 BALLAST TANKS AND CAN CARRY SOME 54 MILLION GALLONS OF OIL (ABOUT 245 MILLION LITRES). SHE WILL BE USED TO CARRY OIL FROM ABOUT GBP5 1/2 MILLION.

IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THE IDEMITSU MARU WILL REMAIN THE WORLD'S LARGEST SHIP FOR LONG. THE ISHIKAWAJIMA EXPECT TO START WORK ON A 276,000-TON TANKER NEXT YEAR, AND THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT HAS SAID THAT IT IS CONSIDERING BUILDING A 500,000-TON TANKER.
