Background: Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister, Prince Saud Al Faisal, arrived in Algeria on Tuesday (23 October), following a one-day visit to Morocco. Prince Saud carried a message from Saudi Arabia's King Faisal to Algerian President, Chadli Benjedid.
SYNOPSIS: The Saudi Minister was greeted at the airport by his Algerian counterpart, Mohamed Ben Yohzo. The visit was unpublicized, but followed a similar journey by Prince Saud to the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
No official communique has been released, but observers noted that the following day Algeria's national oil company increased the price of crude exports with immediate effect. Earlier this month, Prince Saud was reported to have suggested that his country would not maintain its present rate of oil output. The visit also coincides with growing tensions as a result of the escalating war in the Western Sahara. Hostilities--which culminated recently in heavy fighting for the last Moroccan stronghold in the territory -- are causing a deepening rift between Morocco and Algeria.
