Background: The British Isles became the undisputed world leaders of Rugby Union on Saturday (13 July) when the touring Lions easily won their touring test series against South Africa at Port Elizabeth.

The Lions won by 26 points to 9 in the third game of the fourtest series.

After a scratchy start, which had the Lions leading 7-3 at half time, captain Willie John McBride and his men took complete charge of the game, notching up a goal, two tries, two penalties and two dropped goals in the second half against three penalties.

The Lions' victory gained the British side the distinction of becoming the first international touring side to beat the Springboks in a four-test series this century. The last time it happened was in 1896 when the Lions won a series 3 games to one.

The match was marred by two brutal brawls in which players on both sides lost their tempers and waded into each other with fists flying.

The Lions had won the last two matches of the series, the first game played in Cape Town and the second in Pretoria.

The South African selectors made 11 changes in the Springbok line-up, but this did little to improve their chances. In fact, after three test matches, the Springboks were still to cross the touchline against the Lions.

The game was a personal victory for Lions winger, J. J. Williams. He scored both tries for the British side, and took his tally for the three South African matches to four -- more than any Lion has scored in one test series.

A crowd of nearly 60,000 saw the Springboks lose the series -- among them 4,000 blacks who were later heavily criticised for cheering any Lions movement and booing whenever the Springboks gained possession.

A crowd of almost sixty thousand watched the Springboks go down in a four-test series for the first time this century. After a scratchy first half, the Lions took control of the game with some textbook movements and blinding speed. Winger J.J. Williams scored the Lions' first try.

The South African selectors had replaced eleven men in the Springbok line-up, following defeats at Cape Town and Pretoria. But despite this, the Springboks could not keep the Lions at bay. Lions fullback, J.P.R. Williams began the movement which gave the Lions their second try. J.J. Williams on the wing finished it off with a long run to the line. It was his fourth try for the series -- more than any Lion had scored in one test series.

With everything going their way, the Lions sealed the game, and the series with a dropped goal by fly-half Phil Bennet. The South Africans in return scored three penalties, and were still to cross the touchline against the Lions. the final score -- a convincing twenty six to nine.
