Background: Two large Viet Cong rockets landed in Saigon on Saturday (19th December) killing six civilians and wounding eight others.
The Soviet-made 122 millimetre missiles hit the capital in the early hours of the morning. Viet Cong activity had been anticipated at he time, as it was the 24th anniversary of the Vietnamese uprising against the French, as well as the 10th anniversary of the movement's political division.... the National Liberation Front. On Tuesday (22nd December) the North Vietnamese also mark the founding of the Peoples' Army in 1944.
One the rockets slammed into a residential area causing widespread damage and casualties. Four of the dead, and six of the wounded were reported to be children. While Saigon was counting the cost of the attack, American helicopter gunships were moving into position along the coast to support South Vietnamese troops.
