Background: After Holy Mass in the Sistina Chapel, of St. Peter's Cathedral, Vatican City, Jan 25, His Holiness Pope John 23rd led twenty-four Cardinals and eight hundred Archbishops and Bishops in procession to the Benediction Hall, where, behind locked doors, the first Roman Catholic Diocesan Synod ever to be held in the Eternal City was begun.
More than seven hundred items of Roman Catholic Church business, and proposals for its future policy, were submitted to the Synod for approval.
Synods have been held in other cities and regions.
Synods - centuries old solemn and secret council meetings of heads of the Church - are very rare occasions. The last was held 260 years ago.
