    Background: West German President, Professor Theodor Heuss, arrived London, October 20, on the first state visit by a German Head of State since the Kaiser in 1907.

    The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal Family, met the President as he stepped from the train that had brought him from Gatwick Airport.

    With the Queen and the Duke, the 74-year-old President drove through crowded London streets - along Parliament Street, down Whitehall, past the Cenotaph and up the Mall to Buckingham Palace.
