    Background: VINA DEL MAR, CHILE

Human rights organisations have attacked foreign musicians for playing at an international song festival held recently (19/20 February) in Chile. They said it was particularly wrong for the British rock band Police to appear at the festival, in the resort of Vina del Mar. Their appearance came just a fortnight before the release of a film called 'The Secret Policeman's Other Ball,' starring the lead singer in Police and based on a benefit show for Amnesty International, the human rights group. Police said their music was their political statement. Among others performing at the festival, attended by about 15,000 people, were the Turkish singer Burak, Italy's Franco Simone and a number of Chilean singers. Chile's human rights record has been criticised by many other countries.
