Background: Andrei Gromyko on the orders of Mr. Khruschev entertained May 20 French Foreign Minister de Murville at the Soviet Union's permanent delegation headquarters at the U.N. Geneva.
M. de Murville indicated implacability at this week's Conference sessions - on the orders of President Charles de Gaulle. But at this lunch, career diplomat de Murville smiled in affable mood.
Goodness, an invasion, said de Murville when cameramen and photographers were allowed into the lunch room. Andrei Gromyko replied: Yes, but at least they are all foreigners.
As the Foreign Ministers' private luncheons, dinners, back-stage meetings increased and secret sessions seemed imminent to break the pre-summit conference deadlock, reports from Paris said de Gaulle would not attend a summit meeting - if outside Europe.
