Background: A 67-YEAR-OLD RAILWAY VIADUCT NEAR BEXHILL WAS BLOWN UP TODAY (FRIDAY) BY EXPLOSIVE EXPERTS. THE 100 FEET (30 METRES) HIGH STRUCTURE CARRIED TRAINS ACROSS MARSHLAND UNTIL 1964 WHEN IT WAS DECIDED TO DEMOLISH IT TO MAKE WAY FOR A RESERVOIR.

THE DATE OF THE DEMOLITION WAS ADVERTISED IN LOCAL NEWSPAPERS BECAUSE OF THE LARGE INTEREST THAT HAS BEEN SHOWN IN THE VIADUCT. AN AREA WAS MARKED OUT AT A SAFE DISTANCE FOR SPECTATORS.

MANY PEOPLE HAVE PROTESTED AT THE PLANS FOR ITS DEMOLITION INCLUDING LOCAL MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT SIR NEIL COOPER-KEY.

A LONDON FIRM WAS AWARDED THE DEMOLITION CONTRACT FOR GBP6,000 STERLING PLUS THE VALUABLE BRICK RUBBLE. THERE ARE ABOUT 9 MILLION BRICKS.

PREPARATORY WORK BEGAN EARLY IN APRIL WHEN BULLDOZERS KNOCKED AWAY THE PARAPETS.

TODAY'S WORK WAS PART OF THE DEMOLITION. THE WORK ON THE QUARTER OF A MILE (750 METRES) VIADUCT WILL BE DONE IN STAGES.
