TRANSCRIPT: HOBBS: "It was fast, but it's got to be so fast, unfortunately."



MAN'S VOICE: "It was only point five percent."



HOBBS: "So you'd have to go very early in the morning... very early."



MAN'S VOICE: "Like three o'clock...in the bar?"



HOBBS: "Three o'clock. I don't think I should say."



REPORTER: "Would you go any faster behind Robert?"



HOBBS: "Would I go any faster? If it's flat, you see. But ...we caught that cruiser's wash coming back. It's little things...honestly...imagine."



MAN'S VOICE: "(INDISTINCT)."



SECOND MAN'S VOICE: "You could be right out of the water."



HOBBS: "Yes. Well, the boat came right out of the water, and I just felt, 'I'm going to tip off, and I'm not going to land'. They eased off, and it was just a bit too much, I suppose."

Background: Two world records attempts on water -- one succeeding, one failing narrowly. On Thursday (19 October), Jackie Wilson drove a Formula One circuit powerboat on Lake Windemere in northern England at one hundred and twenty-two point nine miles an hour (196.78 kph) to set a new world record. Waterskier Elizabeth Hobbs went faster than the existing women's world record, but was one tenth of a mile an hour (0.16 kph) too slow to claim a new official record.

SYNOPSIS: Here's Wilson making the first of two runs in his Cosworth-powered Hodges cataraman craft.

Now the second run. Wilson was after the record of one hundred and twenty-one point four five miles an hour (194.32 kph) his friend and great rival, Alf Bullen, had set earlier in this Windemere Record Week. Wilson went fast enough.

British waterskier, Elizabeth Hobbs, was out to break her own world record of seventy-two point six miles an hour (116.16 kph). She did clock seventy-four miles an hour (118.40 kph), but failed by just one tenth of a mile an hour to exceed the record by the required amount.
