Background: Despite the world-wide oil tanker slump, a Brazilian shipyard has just completed a supertanker designed to carry either oil or iron ore.

The vessel was dedicated on June the 27th at the rio de Jeneiro shipyard where it was built.

??? the Brazilian Government is confident that the 131 thousand tone "Joinville", the second of a five ship series, won't be laid up immediately although nearly 15 percent of the world tanker fleet is lying idle.

The Brazilians expect the "Joinville" to begin operations as soon as sea trials are completed carrying iron ore from Brazil to Japan, and returning with oil for home consumption by way of the Middle East.

A major reason for Brazil's tanker building programme is its booming economy and growing export market.

Brazil relies on shipping to carry on almost all her trading with other nations. And the country need vast quantities of oil, as its economy expands.

But that is only part of the picture. The "Joinville" was build with Japanese cooperation and for some time Japan has had its eyes on Brazil's huge mineral wealth.
