    Background: TWENTY-TWO PEOPLE HAD LUCKY ESCAPES FROM DEATH WHEN A TWIN-ENGINE AIRLINER CRASHED WHILE TRYING TO LAND IN HEAVY RAIN AT NEW DELHI AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT OVERSHOT CRASHING SOME THREE MILES (FIVE KMS) AWAY. THE PILOT WAS KILLED.

    THE AIRCRAFT, A FOKKER FRIENDSHIP OF NEPAL AIRLINES, WAS ON FLIGHT FROM KATMANDU WITH EIGHTEEN PASSENGERS AND CREW OF FIVE.

    ONE WING OF THE AIRCRAFT BROKE OFF IN THE CRASH BUT THE FUSELAGE REMAINED INTACT.

    ONE PASSENGER AND ONE CREW MEMBER WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WITH SERIOUS INJURIES, BUT THE OTHERS, INCLUDING AMERICAN, SWISS, DUTCH, AUSTRALIAN AND JAPANESE PASSENGERS, WERE TREATED FOR MINOR CUTS AND BRUISES.

    DARKNESS AND HEAVY RAIN HANDICAPPED RESCUE WORKERS. SURVIVORS PRAISED A SWISS DOCTOR, ONE OF THE PASSENGERS, WHO TENDED TO THE INJURED AND TRIED TO REVIVE THE PILOT.
