Background: In China, Dutch Prime Minister Andreas Van Agt is reported to have accused the Soviet Union of threatening world peace. According to the New China News Agency, he told a reception on Thursday (30 October) that the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) countries needed to strengthen their solidarity to combat this threat.

SYNOPSIS: Prime Minster Andreas Van Agt arrived in China on Wednesday (29 October) for a seven-day visit during which he will sign agreements covering economic and technological cooperation. He was greeted by Prime Minister Zhao Ziyang and Foreign Minister Huang Hua.

After reviewing a guard of honour drawn from three wings of the People's Liberation Army, the leaders began talks on current foreign policy issues, concentrating on the situation in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Kampuchea and Europe. The Chinese Prime Minister expressed particular concern at the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan and Vietnamese presence in Kampuchea, claiming they both constituted a serious threat to world peace.

Speaking at a banquet in Mr. Van Agt's honour, the Chinese premier called on Europe to unite and develop closer cooperation with China and the developing world, to enable it to face up to what he termed the Soviet threat. According to the Chinese News Agency Mr. Van Agt also expressed considerable concern at the Soviet presence in Afghanistan and stressed that it should not be accepted as an established achievement.
