Background: The men's and women's basketball competition at the 1971 Pan American games in Coli, Colombia, ended Thursday night (Aug 12) with the strong Brazil teams winning both gold medals.
Earlier it looked certain that Cube would win the women's competition and Brazil the men's.
But narrow defeats in the final rounds ended the Cubans' hopes and they took the bronze medals for third place in both the men's and women's competitions.
The United States were second in the women's competition. They scored the some number of points - eleven - as the winning Brazilian side, but were second on goal averages.
The women's competition has been held only since 1955 and the USA won three times, in 1955, 1959, and 1963, and Brazil won at the previous Pan american games in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1967
But in the men's competition Brazil ended the United States monopoly on the gold medal. The US had won every competition in the games since 1951. This year they were put out in the qualifying round and did not take part in the final rounds.
Cuba made a strong bid for both titles and looked to be in a strong position to win the women's title with two rounds to go. but they lost two games to slip down to third position. They lost to the United States by one point - 63 to 62 - and to brazil by four points - 66 to 62.
By coincidence the Cuban men's team lost their final game against Brazil also by 62 points to 63. and they went down to Puerto Rico by five points - 79 to 84.
Brazil has thus become the only country other than the US to win both men's and women's basketball at the same games. The US achieved the feat in 1955, 1959 and 1963.
The Cubans' third place did not, however, affect their overall standing at the Games. They are still second to the United states in tally of medals won and for the first time since canada began competing in the Pan american Games in 1959 they have been pushed out of second place. The Cubans, showing is the best by any Latin American country at a Pan American Games. although they have only won half as many medals as the United States they have won three times as many as the next best Latin American country, Mexico, who is in fourth place after Canada.
The final men's game, on Thursday, between Brazil an Cuba, was one of the best of the competition with never more than 5 points separating the two sides. Cube went to an early lead, but Brazil overhauled them, then, lost the lead to retain it minutes before the ???
