TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 8: GOWON: "But as you know I was in Sudan earlier on, on my way to the OAU. We only spent about two days there - there again, a great welcome. Nigeria is thought of very highly. As it was thought of it the U.A.R. And I got a very big welcome there, and I must say that we really have very true friends in all the countries that I have visited. Of course Addis Ababa, the home of the O.A.U., the Ethiopian Emperor high Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie, was on top form, and I must say that although it was not an official visit to Addis Ababa, it was a very successful visit to the O.A.U. meeting. A total success I think we would say, for Nigeria. And for African Unity, and for mankind in general.

Nigeria is not a country that has to start bothering itself about one individual, as far as the question of the relationship between countries is concerned. In fact, I don't think Ojukwu even came into the scene at all. I have not been able to meet the President of Ivory Coast yet, probably when I see him we might probably discuss the problem of Ojukwu. But as far as I am concerned, it was a reconciliation, a Nigerian reconciliation, as far as I'm concerned."

Background: The Nigerian head of state, General Yakubu Gowon arrived home on Tuesday (September 8) from a two-week tour of four African countries. The Nigerian leader visited Algeria, Sudan, UAR and attended the Organisation of African Unity conference (OAU) in Addis Ababa. On his arrival he spoke with reporters about his tour.

General Gowon arrived in a special Nigerian Airways Boeing 707 from Cairo, where he paid an official visit at the invitation of President Nasser.

He told reporters, that the OAU summit in Addis Ababa was extremely successful for Nigeria in particular and African Unity in general. At the conference reconciliation between Nigeria and the four African countries that recognised the former Biafra regime -- Tanzania, Zambia, Ivory Coast and Gabon -- was reached.

Questioned about the continued presence of former Biafran leader Odumegwu Ojukwu in the Ivory Coast, the Nigerian leader said that when he meets President Houpouet-Boigny the matter would possibly by discussed. (The former Biafran leader has been living in the Ivory Coast town of Yamoussoukro, about 130 miles -- 200 kilometres -- north of Abidjan, since the collapse of the secessionist regime in January).
