Background: Albania -- whose tow-point seven million people live in the poorest and most isolated country in Europe, has a strict but unorthodox education system. By law, Albanians are required to raise their children to become 'good Communists'. At this secondary school of foreign languages in the capital Tirana, students have the facilities of a phonetics laboratory (audio aids) although traditional methods are used, as with these essays in French (sequence 4). Sport is high on the curriculum, and so too are the teachings of Lenin, Stalin and Enver Hoxha -- the Communist party chief who has ruled Albania for the past 35 years. Albania shares a lengthy border with its ancient enemy Yugoslavia. The entire adult population is armed, there is live ammunition in every cottage and it is said that ten minutes after an alarm, any village is ready to fight a foreign invader. Military training is therefore an important part of a student's education. In a country that feeds itself and forbids credit deals with either the West or East, it is not surprising that farm husbandry is learnt at an early age.
