SYNOPSIS: Women patients wearing bedclothes watched in the cold night air as the Shia Moslem leader was surrounded by enthusiastic crowds before finally being helped into his car by his son, Hajjesteslam. Revolutionary guards held back a crowd of about five Hundred people as they surged towards their leader. At the ??? ??? guards who had been a ??? ??? the hospital grounds rushed to the car to protect the Ayatollah in the chaos.
In a broadcast earlier on Sunday (2 March) the Ayatollah Khomeini thanked the team of doctors who had nursed him back to health. The ten minute speech, made from a hospital balcony,was broadcast within minutes by State Radio in an apparent move to reassure Iranians of their leader's state of health.
The Ayatollah also made another call for national unity and advised Iranian s to vote for faithful Moslems in this month's (March) parliamentary elections. Doctors at the Mehdi Rezai Clinic have instructed Ayatollah Khomeini to live within reasonable distance of the hospital so that medical treatment can be provided as soon as possible if it's required. They also suggest he reduce his work schedule.
