Background: IN FRANCE, THE MINER'S STRIKE ENTERS ITS SECOND MONTH.AND INTO PARIS TODAY (SUNDAY) AS ONE CONSEQUENCE - AN INVASION OF MINERS CHILDREN.IN ALL, 14,000 POURED INTO THE CITY BY CONVOYS OF BUSES.THERE, FRENCH WELFARE WORKERS GREETED THEM WITH FOOD AND DRINK.THEN, LABELLED, THE CHILDREN WERE SENT OFF TO GOOD GODPARENTS" - FAMILIES WHO WILL LOOK AFTER THEM AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE FOR TWO WEEKS, FOR THE EASTER SCHOOL HOLIDAY.

WHILE THE MINER'S STRIKE GOES ON, FRANCE IS FACING ANOTHER WEEK OF THREATENED SURPRISE STOPPAGES IN STATE-OWNED POWER AND TRANSPORTATION CONCERNS.THE MINERS - 240,000 ARE OUT - ARE SPEARHEADING A NEAR-NATIONWIDE WAGE WAR AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT.NEITHER SIDE AT THE WEEKEND LOOKED WILLING TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE FOR RESUMING TALKS.THOUGH BOTH SAID THEY WERE READY FOR THEM.

THE MINERS - WIDELY RECOGNISED AS UNDERPAID - HAVE STRONG PUBLIC SYMPATHY.AS WELL AS HIGHER PAY, THEY ARE DEMANDING FOUR WEEK'S ANNUAL HOLIDAY - THEY'RE THE FEW STATE EMPLOYEES TO HAVE LESS.

IN PARIS AND OTHER CITIES, THE MINERS ARE OUT IN THE STREETS COLLECTING FUNDS ON OUTSTRETCHED TRICOLOUR FLAGS.AND IN THE MINING TOWNS, FOOD IS BEING DISTRIBUTED FOR THE MINERS' FAMILIES.PARCELS ARE BEING SENT FROM ALL OVER FRANCE.LOCAL RETAILERS ARE HELPING BY GIVING THE MINERS CREDIT, AND DONATIONS FOR THE MINERS' FUND ARE ON THE WAY FROM MINERS' UNIONS ABROAD.
