Background: One of the first official functions of Israel's new Army C-in-C, General Chaim Laskov, was a visit to a Beduin encampment 20 miles South-East of the Negev desert 'capital' of Beersheba. General Laskov succeeded Moshe Dyan, the much admired young soldier who was always easily recognisable by the black patch over his eye. Laskov, too, is young at 39 years of age. He served in the British Army during world war 11 and underwent further military training in Britain four years ago.
