I was given -- the notice was in the press on the eleventh, in less than two hours I was condemned to prison; no witnesses were present in a court which was not legally competent to hold the case."

Background: Mrs. Margaret McKay, who was acquitted by the Amman Court of Appeal of issuing two cheques which were later dishonoured, claimed in a Beirut press conference on Thursday (11 March) that the charges were part of a campaign against the Arabs. Mrs. 59, was sentenced last month in her absence to a year's imprisonment for the two cheques. Mrs. Mckay is a former British Labour Member of Parliament.
