Background: The seventh day of the Middle East fighting (12th October 1973) passed with continued -- but limited -- air and ground battles along the Sinal front.
Both sides appear to be massing forces in the desert, the Egyptians for a possible push through the Mitla Pass and up into the heart of Sinai and the Israelis for an attempt to push the Egyptians back across the Suez Canal.
In today's clashes, the Egyptians claimed to have shot down 15 Israeli aircraft. Cairo Radio said the warplanes were trying to raid Port Said and the central sector of the Sinai Desert front. They were intercepted by Egyptian jet fighters and air defences.
This film was shot about three miles (5 kms) into Sinal from the Suez Canal, in what is now Egyptian-held territory. The smoke rising in the distance is about nine miles (15 km) away and reporters were told it come from Egyptian artillery shelling an Israeli position. The Egyptians said they had crossed the Canal into the area in small boats. taking the Israeli positions and capturing about 50 prisoners. After securing the area, they built pontoon bridges across the Canal to speed up supplies and reinforcements.
