    DRESSED IN KHAKIS, THE DEFENCE SECRETARY FLEW INTO DA NANG FROM SAIGON, 375 MILES (600 KMS) TO THE SOUTH WEST.THERE ARE MORE THAN 9,000 MARINES AT DA NANG, ONE OF THE MAIN OPERATIONAL BASES.MR.MCNAMARA TALKED BRIEFLY WITH SOME OF THE AMERICAN AIR CREWS AND MARINES.STRICT SECURITY PRECAUTIONS WERE TAKEN FOR THE VISIT, FOR DA NANG IS CONSTANTLY THREATENED BY THE VIET CONG.

    AFTER A TRIP TO LE MY, A FRONT-LINE VILLAGE, THE DEFENCE SECRETARY FLEW BY HELICOPTER TO THE U.S.AIRCRAFT CARRIER "INDEPENDENCE", ANCHORED 80 MILES (129 KILOMETRES) OFFSHORE.HE WAS GREETED BY VICE-ADMIRAL BLACKBURN AND REAR ADMIRAL JAMES REEDY.

    MR.MCNAMARA TOURED THE CARRIER AND TALKED TO FLIGHT CREWS.HE WAS GIVEN A BRIEFING ON THE CARRIER'S ROLE IN THE WAR AND LISTENED TO THE REPORTS OF TWO PILOTS WHO HAD JUST RETURNED FROM AN AIR STRIKE.

    BEFORE LEAVING FOR HOME TODAY (TUESDAY), MR.ROBERT MCNAMARA, SAID THAT IN MANY RESPECTS THERE HAD BEEN A DETERIORATION IN THE VIETNAM CONFLICT.HE TOLD REPORTERS THAT THE OVERALL SITUATION CONTINUED TO BE SERIOUS.HE ADDED THAT THE PICTURE WAS NOT BLACK BY ANY MEANS, FOR THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE CONTINUED TO BE WILLING TO FIGHT AND DIE IN THEIR OWN DEFENCE.
