Background: In Senegal, the country has been celebrating 18 years as an independent republic....celebrations which ??? with the re-election for a further five-year term of President Leopold Sedar Senghor.
SYNOPSIS: President Senghor took part in Tuesday's celebrations in Dakar...the first official duty he performed after being sworn in for his fifth term of office the previous day.
President Senghor has led the country throughout its 18 years of independence, and he was also President in 1958 when the country became an autonomous member of the French Community.
At the start of the celebrations, the President awarded decorations to two senior Army officers.
Senegal's independence is now celebrated only every other year. The theme of Tuesday's parade...youth and the Army.
