Background: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman flew into New Delhi for a brief visit and talks with Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, on Wednesday (10 April).
Mrs. Gandhi met Sheikh Mujib at the airport and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Kamal Hossain, who last night signed Bangladesh's first agreement with Pakistan, was also there.
Sheikh Mujib called in at New Delhi on his way home from three weeks of treatment in Moscow for acute bronchitis. He refused to comment on the tripartite agreement with India and Pakistan under which Bangladesh will drop plans to try 195 Pakistani prisoners for war crimes. But Sheikh Mujib said Bangladesh would always try for a permanent peace in the area. He hoped Pakistan would too.
Sheikh Mujib declined to inspect a guard of honour at the airport because of tiredness but he had dinner and two rounds of talks with Mrs. Gandhi before he flew on to Dacca.
