Background: Cuban Premier Fidel Castro-hospitalised since July 9 with an alleged attack of pneumonia-has not only given a nationwide TV broadcast from his bed but has also been interviewing newsmen as he lay recumbent between the sheets.

The TV'cast - he made it sitting propped against the pillows and wearing a battle-dress-type blouse enforcing the bearded revolutionary effect-came July 10, a day after he should have addressed a crowd of thousands in Cuba's main square. The crowds waited three hours in the sun, before being told by one of the Government Ministers that Castro would not be appearing as announced because of a patch in one lung. Gist of Castro's TV message was that the whole world was turning against the US and it was a good thing that little countries like Cuba now had an ally in the USSR against "Yankee aggression".

Meanwhile, Castro's brother Raul, Cuba's Minister of the armed forces, appeared July 17 in Moscow. Purpose and duration of his visit were not stated, but he arrived following a good will visit to Europe - which took him to Czechoslovakia -and the Middle East. Big question mark in the Pentagon: is Raul's visit a prelude to a Russia-Cuba security treaty?
