Background: INTRODUCTION: In Japan, Pedro Flores of Mexico has won the World Boxing Association light-flyweight title from the Japanese holder, Yoko Gushiken. The flight, in Okinawa on Sunday (8 March), was stopped in the 12th round after Flores had dealt out some heavy punishment.

SYNOPSIS: Both fighters started cautiously, with Gushiken, in the white trunks, piling up a comfortable lead in the early rounds. He pushed Flores back to the ropes again and again, but his punches were not strong enough to shake the resilient Mexican.

The 11th round ... and Flores is heavily on the attack. The match had turned decisively in his favour in the eighth round, after he cornered the champion with a two-fisted barrage. American referee Steplen Crosslon stopped the fight and ordered a mandatory count of eight.

Gushiken became little more than a punch-bag. He tried desperately for a comeback, but his punches had lost their speed and sting. The courageous champion weathered the storm until the 12th round, when a hail of punches put him down.

When Gushiken tottered onto his feet again, he met a merciless attack. After recent deaths in the ring, many spectators were surprised the punishment was allowed to continue. Pedro Flores became the new light-flyweight champion -- a title held by Yoko Gushiken for almost four years.
