Background: Moroccan troops of the United Nations held a big celebration at their camp at Thysville,Congo Republic,Nov 18. The occasion - the anniversary of King Mohammed V's return from French-imposed exile in 1956. The King is also Premier of Morocco pending General Elections.

Thysville is about 100 miles south of Leopoldville. Moroccan troops were sent there after the first mutiny in the Force Publique last July. A highlight of the celebrations was the roasting of 50 sheep over open fires. It was a big job - and a hot job - cooking them all.

And when they were ready, the soldiers pulled off the meat in true barbeque style. It was tasty to the last lick! They followed the feast with music and singing.

Inside the nearby Camp Hardy, Thysville .... A VISNEWS cameraman obtained the personal permission of Colonel Mobutu, the Congo Army leader, to visit it Nov 19/20. Cameraman says the camp is well-run - this group of men were assigned to keep it tidy.

Built by the Belgians, Camp Hardy was at the centre of last July's mutiny. It is now run by Congolese officers and two former Belgian officers of the Force Publique. Over it flies the new flag of the Congo Republic : blue with gold stars.

The camp is well-equipped, with a large kitchen block and new married quarters. One of the children there played his own game of soldiers, using his father's helmet! While the men train, their wives work, preparing native dishes that have changed little down the centuries.

But at Camp Hardy is the backbone of Colonel Mobutu's Army .... tanks and parachutists.
