Background: Contradictory allegations of deaths and torture are filtering out of Iran. On August 16 the funeral of three Revolutionary Guards alleged to have been tortured, then killed, by members of the underground People's Mujahideen Organisation, attracted emotional responses from huge crowds in the streets of Teheran. Evin Prison Public Prosecutor Ja'afar Lajevardi said the rebels, now in custody, had admitted their deeds. On the same day, however, exiled Iranian sources reported that 70 officers had been shot by firing squad after summary trials at the prison. They are said to have been involved in former Foreign Minister Sadeq Qotbzadeh's alleged plot against the government. Officials at Evin prison, where Mr. Qotbzadeh is being held, told Reuters News Agency by telephone they could neither deny nor confirm the executions. A statement from the Paris headquarters of the Mujahideen organisation announced on August 18 that hundreds of political prisoners at Evin prison had been shot. The statement said eye-witness accounts showed that 35 prisoners had been executed daily over the last six weeks. The Mujahideen have appealed to human rights organisations to send observers to Iranian jails, to try and save prisoners' lives.
