Background: Highlight of an international "Wildwater Regatta" on the Lieser River near Seeboden, Austria, July 31, was a Canoe slalom, won by Kostal (Czechoslovakia) with compatriot Vlik second. Each had ten faults over the 20-gate course, but Kostal's time was faster.
Competitors from several countries took part in preliminary rounds, but the final was fought out by Austrians, Czechs, and Germans. The water was rough and fast, but all finalists negotiated the course safely - a remarkable feat in view of ten Czech canoes destroyed in training runs in the rushing waters.
Austrians now hope that the International Canoeing Federation will appreciate the Lieser's potentialities and hold the 1963 World Championships there.
