Background: Jim Ryun, the American athlete, ran the fastest mile of the year at a meeting in Lawrence, Kansas, yesterday. He covered the distance in 3 minutes 55.8 seconds ... the fastest time since Kip Keino's 3 minutes 55.5 seconds on 1 August last year.
The last time Ryun ran a mile outdoors was in June 1969 after which he went into temporary retirement. He proved he had lost none of his speed by completing the last lap in 55.3 seconds.
SYNOPSIS: The holder of the record for the mile, American Jim Ryun celebrated his return to outdoor running yesterday by clocking the year's fastest time for the distance. The event was staged in Lawrence, Kansas.
Ryun led for most of the race. After a slow start he gradually increased the pace which proved to much for the majority of the competitors. He ran the final lap in 55.3 seconds to give him an overall time of 3 minutes 55.8 seconds....the fastest mile since August the first last year when Kip Keino covered the distance in 3 minutes 55.5 seconds.
