Background: The former President of India, Varahagiri Venkata Giri became the 16th recipient of the highly valued Bharat Ratna award during in simple but impressive ceremony in New Delhi on Monday (February 10).

The award is given to people who have given exceptional service towards the advancement of Art, Literature and Science and in recognition of public service of the highest order. People of any race, sex, or occupation are eligible.

Among the other famous people who have been given the award are Pandit Nehru who received it in 1955 and the Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira in 1971.

Mrs. Gandhi and other leading politicians were present at the Presidential Palace to see President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed give the award to the man he succeeded.

The decoration of Bharat Ratna is a bronze coined leaf with the sun etched on it. The decoration is worn around the neck.
