Background: At the State House in Entebbe on Saturday, Uganda's new military ruler made it plain to the country's former Royal Constitutional rulers, including relatives of the late Kabaka of Buganda, the largest kingdom, that Uganda would remain a Republic, and that there was no question of reinstatement of the four main kingdoms.

At the same meeting, an army spokesman announced that Idi Amin was promoted from Major-General to General, and was also Uganda's new President.

The tone of the occasion was festive, with traditional dancers celebrating General Amin. He was at pains to point out that he and his military forces bore no ill-will against the former kings in Uganda.
