Background: At a press conference in Amman on Sunday (10th January), Jordan's Information Minister, Adnan Abu Odeh, told journalists that Army transport vehicles had been sent to Baka's camp for refugees..... nine miles north-west of the city... to escort 100 Syrian and Iraqi guerrillas out of the country while security forces clashed with armed groups in the capital.

The army vehicles had been sent at the request of the Camp's officials, Mr. Odeh said. However, Beirut, a Fatah spokesman had earlier said that hundreds of people had already deserted the camp and headed for the Israeli-occupied west bank of the River Jordan, after the area had been surrounded by Jordanian tanks, and demonstrators had been fired upon.

Mr. Odeh suggested to the pressmen that a third group was attempting "to create chaos, and harm to the country." He felt the Government and resistance movement should co-operate to uncover what he described as "foisted elements" and expel them from Jordan.
