Background: Since it was established in 1838, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, has collected more than 61 million exhibits. Most of them have been painstakingly researched, catalogued and displayed... but there are a few loose ends. And they've recently been given an exhibition of their own.

A large question mark hangs over the curious collection of unidentified objects, which range from a patent model of a wierd machine to something which could be - but isn't - as asparagus packer.

The idea behind the exhibition is both to entertain and inform. The Institution hopes that during the display, members of the public may be able to fill in some of the gaps in the Smithsonian's usually meticulous catalogue.
