INTRODUCTION: As Lebanon's ceasefire enters its third month, guerrilla groups from various factions continue to be active in the south of the country. One of these, the Nasserite "Arab Egypt" organisation, exhibited its military preparation on Sunday (4 October) at a graduation ceremony for recruits.
SYNOPSIS: The "Arab Egypt" group is one of number of pan-Arab organisations active in southern Lebanon. Collectively called the Mouribitoun, or National Movement, they take their pan-Arab inspiration from the memory of Gamel Abdul Nasser, the Egyptian leader who died in 1970.
They were formed during Lebanon's civil war over five years ago and have fought alongside Palestinian groups since. israel is seen as the main enemy and this particular group of recruits have been named after Handi Tarabishi who was killed in as Israeli attack in southern Lebanon in May. Since the ceasefire with Israel came into force on July 24, southern Lebanon has been relatively quiet. But the Mouribitoun have accused Lebanon's rightist militias of responsibility for the recent series of bombings in the country.
The training for the "Arab Egypt" volunteer is rigorous and includes exercising with live rounds. Many of the recruits are Egyptians and all are supporters of the Palestinians. While the fragile ceasefire holds they are unlikely to see action against the Israelis. But the Palestine Liberation Organisation(PLO) has accused Israel of complicity int eh recent bombings and a further escalation of the tension could endanger the ceasefire."
