Background: Before beginning their election campaign tour, Vice-President Richard Nixon and Mr. Henry Cabot Lodge, Republican party candidates for President and Vice-President in the forthcoming November elections, flew from Washington August 1st to Newport, Rhode Island, for talks with President Eisenhower who is on vacation there.
The following day - August 2 - Mr. Nixon began his campaign in Nevada where his wife was born. From there he will continue to California, where he was born, the new State of Hawaii and the State of Washington.
Formal campaign speaking will began for Mr. Nixon in Hawaii, which contributes only three votes to the needed electoral college majority of 269. Both Mr. Nixon and the Democratic Party's candidate, Mr. John Kennedy, feel that the election will be one of the closest ever fought, and even three votes could be decisive.
