Background: INTRODUCTION: Thousands of pilgrims from throughout the world gathered at Fatima recently (October 12-16) to mark the 64th. anniversary of the Virgin Mary's apparition there in 1917. Ever since three children reported the vision, Fatima, 120 kilometres (approximately 75 miles) north of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, has become one of the world's most celebrated religious centres.

SYNOPSIS: The cathedral at Fatima was built after three young peasant children from the town told the world what had happened. They claimed to have seen a woman who identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary -- a vision at re-appeared each subsequent month until October. Then, a crowd generally estimated at 70,000, witnessed what has been described as a "miraculous solar phenomenon" immediately after the Madonna had appeared before the children. This war, she said, would be the most savage and brutal known to mankind and would threaten every nation in the world.

The Virgin, the children said, had given them three messages. In the first she asked the Catholic Church to dedicated Russia to her, and, in the second predicted a violent war if the people of the world continued to offend God.

The third prophecy has been read by only one man -- Pope John the 23rd. The contents are still a secret but are thought to predict a massive conflict within the Vatican and the Catholic Church.

This week, the worshippers were blessed by Cardinal James Sin, Archbishop of Manila, only days after the Pope claimed the Virgin Mary had protected him when he was shot last May.

The Pope believes he was attached at exactly the same time of day that the Virgin first appeared to the three children at Fatima, 64 years before. The protection of the Virgin Mary, he has said since, proved to be stronger than the bullet.
