MARRIOT: "Barry Sheene, yesterday you sprung a bit of a birthday surprise by suddenly announcing you were going car racing this week-end at Silverstone. What was behind it?"

SHEENE: "Well basically, a friend of mine, who is a very good friend of Richard Lloyd, and runs the team, asked me if I would like to have a go in a car. And I wasn't racing this week-end and it seemed like a good idea. And it all started out as a bit of a fun thing, really. Then I came up here yesterday and had a bit of a rush round, and I enjoyed it, and I'm going to drive it. That's basically all there is to it".

MARRIOT: "Rumour suggest that you were rather quick in fact".

SHEENE: "Ah, I don't know. It's hard to say. I done fifty-point-something-or-other. And the lap record is fifty-point-something-or-other. And I was just about half a second outside Richard Lloyd's record, which pleased me no end."

MARRIOT: "This doesn't mean of course that you're switching to four wheels permanently, does it?"

SHEENE: "No. no no. This is a one-off thing...to just have a good week-end's enjoyment."

Background: Twice World Motor Cycle Champion, Britain's Barry Sheene will swap his 500 Suzuki bike for a Volkswagen Golf saloon car on Sunday (16 September) at the Silverstone Racing circuit. Sheene will drive the Golf in the Royal automobile Club's Tourist Trophy, Britain's oldest saloon race. He first decided to try his hand at a test session on Tuesday (11 September) at Silverstone, when he set a time of just over half a second under the lap record.

SYNOPSIS: Barry Sheene says he is unlikely to repeat this venture onto four wheels, and he has reaffirmed his ambition to win back the motor cycle world title. His co-driver in the Tourist Trophy will be Richard Lloyd, who has been dominating his class in saloon car championships. Lloyd says Sheene immediately adapted to the car.

All three Golf drivers are on a winning streak. The third member of Sheene's team, Derek Bell, has just won the final of the County Championships at Thruxton, England after winning a five hundred mile race in the United States.

Sheene has previously tested Grand Prix cars, but never a racing saloon. On Wednesday (12 September) he spoke to Andrew Marriot.
