REPORTER: "Mr Secretary, what did you discuss with the Secretary-General?"

VANCE: "We discussed many subjects. I w as very happy to have a chance to hear about the Secretary-General's trip to Asia and elsewhere.

We also discussed the upcoming Vienna summit, we'll be having very shortly now. We discussed the Middle East, southern Africa and the problem of refugees...many, many different subjects.

REPORTER:Can I assume that President Carter's position on Rhodesia is a position on Rhodesia is a pointer to the Namibia question?"

    VANCE:"A what?"

REPORTER:"A pointer, to the settlement of the Namibia question?"

VANCE: We're going to continue to pursue our efforts in respect of Namibia. The Five will continue their efforts working under the U.N. to see what we can do to bring that to a solution."

Mr Waldheim has welcomed President Carter's decision to continue an economic embargo against Zimbabwe Rhodesia. Mr Vance says he's spoken to the British Government about the decision. There has been speculation that the British Government may recognise the Zimbabwe Rhodesia Government of Bishop Abel Muzorewa. But unless the Security Council agrees to end sanctions..any country permitting trade with Zimbabwe Rhodesia would be in violation of the U.N. charter.
