    Background: KHARTOUM, SUDAN

The Sudanese President, Jaafar Nimeiri, has been awarded an honorary law degree by the Chairman of the Cairo University in Khartoum, Professor Hassan Hameli. The degree was awarded to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Cairo University there. Since it was launched, 15,000 students have graduated. Presidents Nimeiri has granted the university a new site in Khartoum North so the departments can expand and move into new buildings. The awarding of the law degree comes at a time of severe economic hardship for the Sudan. The International financial community has recently completed a rescue package amounting to more than one billion US dollars. The immediate cause of the country's economic problems, experts say, is the almost total lack of foreign exchange, which has led to a drastic shortage of petroleum products.
