Background: A rally of supporters of President Makarios was held in Nicosia, the island's capital, on Wednesday (19 June). Some 2,500 demonstrators gathered at the Civil Servants' Association to protest against the activities of the banned 'EOKA B' organisation following a wave of violence that has swept the Greek Community recently.

Over the previous four days, five people had been shot dead in incidents on the island. One, a British Olympic athlete, was killed when police opened fire on his car after it failed to stop at a checkpoint on Tuesday (18 June). Three other British tourists, including twin sisters, were wounded in the attack.

This shooting came amid stepped-up security in Cyprus, following a series of shooting and bomb attacks by EOKA guerrillas.

The guerrillas, once lad by the late General George Grivas, are campaigning against the Government of President Makarios and are demanding 'Enosis' -- union with Greece.

Three of the four Greek Cypriots to die were killed in the Limassol area of southwest Cyprus. The fourth, also killed on Tuesday, was gunned down on a road near Famagusta in eastern Cyprus.

The rally against the 'EOKA B's' activities was held during a four-hour shut down by shops, factories and Government offices.

After the rally, President Makerios called on the British High Commissioner to express his "deep sorrow" over the shooting of the four Britons. Police said that they had mistaken a guitar in the back of the Britons' car for a gun. When it failed to stop at the checkpoint they opened fire.
