Background: Spain, the host country for this summer's World Cup Soccer tournament, began their preparations for the finals with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Scotland in Valencia on Wednesday (24 February). The match was in the Luis Casanova stadium in Valencia. Spain, in the red shirts, went ahead after 26 minutes. Saura, of Valencia, started an attack, which led to a penalty award when McLeish pushed Alonso. The Scottish goalkeeper, Alan Rough, saved the penalty kick from Satrustekui, only for Victor to score from the rebound. Although Scotland almost equalised several times, Spain scored twice later in the match. In the 83rd minute, Gray was adjudged to have pushed over Saura following a centre by Ufarte. Quini scored with the penalty. In the 87th minute, Gallego burst through the middle of the Scottish defence to beat Rough.
