Background: The Khmer provincial capital of Kampong Cham, to the north east of Phnom Penh, has been under siege by communist forces for the last few weeks. Over 1000 soldiers and civilians have been killed and 5,000 wounded in the battle. The town itself suffered extensive damage as a result of the fighting.

The wounded are still being rushed to hospitals in Phnom Penh by Government helicopters. The main civilian hospital of Kampong Cham, destroyed by shelling, has been completely abandoned. Yet, in spite of the crucial shortage of medical supplies and equipment much of the hospital stock has been left lying in the deserted rubble.

Most of the casualties were suffered as a result of intensive house-to-house fighting. And, as a result many of the larger buildings in the city are marked by shrapnel and bullet holes.

Two communist battalions are still reported to be entrenched in the southern part of the city but the bulk of the communist forces are now ensconced outside the city perimeter.

Government reinforcements are reported arriving by helicopter and river. And the general opinion in the city seems to be that the communists had their chance -- and missed it. Whether or not they will try again remains to be seen.
